Comparing the Executive and Evening MBA Programs

The Evening MBA Program at University of Detroit Mercy, introduced in 1948, has long been a leader among MBA programs directed at working professionals.

In 1963, three years after AACSB embarked upon the accreditation of MBA programs, the University of Detroit's MBA program was in the first group to be accredited. Classes are offered on evenings and on weekends, and students may take up to 5 years to finish, allowing maximum flexibility.

Both the Executive MBA and Evening MBA programs are committed to delivering the highest quality business education by means of a distinguished faculty, a rigorous curriculum, and a select student body. They differ in their primary appeal and target audience.

Executive MBA
Distinctive Characteristic
The hallmark of the Evening MBA Program is flexibility, waiver rules that accommodate prior business education, and varied schedule alternatives. The hallmark of the Executive MBA Program is acceleration. The pace is demanding. There are no electives. The program is designed to deliver a real MBA education in the shortest possible time frame.
Target audience
Admission is selective, and there are fewer specific eligibility requirements for the Evening MBA: it is open to those with a baccalaureate degree The eligibility requirements for the Executive MBA are strict and highly specific: 5+ years of progressive managerial experience, together with sufficient academic aptitude to profit from an accelerated curriculum.

In sum, the Evening MBA program is most appropriate for those with a moderate amount of work experience , or who want to custom design their own curriculum from an array of electives, or whose work or travel schedules require maximum flexibility. By contrast, the Executive MBA program trades off flexibility for acceleration. To insure a rigorous education under its accelerated schedule, the Executive MBA program is only open to those with substantial work experience and a managerial track record of note.
