2014 Spirit of Detroit Award
In late May, the College of Business Administration's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program received a 2014 Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council "in recognition of exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership and dedication to improving the quality of life" in the city.
Associate Professor of Accounting Jeanne David, who leads the College's VITA program, was recognized as a Tax Assistance Program Champion by the Accounting Aid Society, and 13 student volunteers received letters of appreciation from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Tax attorney Joe Pia, who assisted with the tax returns, also taught the service-learning Federal Income Taxation course from which many of the volunteers were recruited. An unannounced audit of our VITA site this year found 100 percent compliance with the government's quality standards.
