Dr. Ellen Engel is a Professor of Accounting at the Graduate School of Business (GSB) at the University of Chicago.  She teaches M.B.A. students in the GSB’s campus/full-time, evening and weekend programs.   Her research activities focus on corporate governance, performance measurement, and the role of accounting information in providing executive and Board of Director incentives.   She received the American Tax Association 2002 Manuscript Award for significant contribution to tax literature for "Debt-Equity Hybrid Securities," published in the Journal of Accounting Research.   Engel received a Kaufmann Faculty Research Grant for Entrepreneural Studies in 2005 and 2000 and an FMC Corporation Faculty Fellowship in 2000.

A native of Detroit and graduate of the UDM College of Commerce and Finance, Ms. Engel worked with Plante & Moran for eight years as a C.P.A. and consultant and concurrently earned an M.B.A degree, with concentrations in finance, statistics, and policy studies, from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business’s weekend program.   In 1991, Ms. Engel accepted a fellowship to pursue a doctorate degree at the Stanford University Graduate Business School.  After completing her Ph.D., she joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1996.    She is on the boards of Urban Gateways and the Evanston Baseball and Softball Association and is a member of the executive committee of the Sacred Heart Schools Parents of the Heart organization.     Ms. Engel resides in Evanston, IL with her husband and two children.
