Major General Sean J. Byrne

Major General Sean J. Byrne was born in Tipperary, Ireland, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Upon graduating from the University of Detroit, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Adjutant General's Corps.

During his initial tour, he served with the 82d Airborne Division. After leaving the Division, he was assigned to Germany where he initially served as Commander, Regional Personnel Center, Fulda, in support of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Black Horse). He later served on the staff of the 22d Personnel and Administration Battalion as the Battalion S-3 (Operations) Officer and, then, as the Battalion Executive Officer. He subsequently served as the Adjutant General Captain's Assignment Officer at the Military Personnel Center, in Alexandria, VA. He was then assigned to the Pentagon as the Executive Officer in the Army's General Officer Management Office (GOMO).

From 1987 through 1991, General Byrne served at the White House. Initially serving as Vice President Bush's Military Assistant, he later became the President's Military Aide. He attended the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College where he was designated as Distinguished Graduate. He returned to Fort Bragg and the 82d Airborne Division as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1, followed by service as the Deputy Commander/Group Executive Officer of the 18th Personnel Group (Airborne). He then commanded the 82d Personnel Services Battalion. Following attendance at the Army War College, he served as Chief, Enlisted Distribution Division, PERSCOM, and was then assigned to Korea as Commander, 8th Personnel Command/Adjutant General U.S. Forces, Korea. At the conclusion of his brigade command, he returned to the Pentagon as the Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Army. Subsequently, he served as Director, Enlisted Personnel Management Directorate, PERSCOM. He commanded 3rd PERSCOM, headquartered at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, in direct support of coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Most recently he served as the Director of Military Personnel Management in the Office of the Army G-1 in the Pentagon.

In addition to his military education, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Detroit and his Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Utah.

His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (w/OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (5 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), and the Master Parachutist Badge.
